Dr. Johnny Powers

Dr. Johnny D Powers has over 30 years of experience leading business strategy, operations, marketing, and product development in the human and pet healthcare markets. He holds a B.A. degree in Chemistry from Wake Forest University, an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University, an M.B.A. from the Duke University Fuqua School of Business, and a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from North Carolina State University. Throughout his career, Dr Powers has held technical, managerial, and executive roles across numerous start-up and international biotech companies.  Most recently, he was an executive at animal health industry leader IDEXX Laboratories, where, prior to his retirement in 2016, he served as executive vice president responsible for global business performance, product innovation and commercialization across multiple business units. Prior to IDEXX, Dr Powers served as President of TriPath Oncology, a North Carolina biotech company focused on developing novel cancer diagnostic tests and imaging systems. After the acquisition of TriPath by Becton Dickinson in 2006, Dr Powers served as vice president of BD’s Women’s Healthcare business for 2 years.  Before joining TriPath, Dr Powers was vice president and general manager of Ventana Medical Systems, an Arizona-based global biotech company that develops and commercializes innovative tests for diagnosing cancer and infectious diseases.  Currently, Dr Powers is the president and founder of JD Powers Consulting Group, providing strategic advisory services in the healthcare industry. He is also an independent board member of Zomedica, a Michigan-based start-up biotech company that develops and commercializes novel pet diagnostic tests.
