The Studio Innovator WF Board

This project, to create a symbol of the engineering department, was designed in a software called LightBurn and then cut out in the Innovation Studio’s largest laser cutter, “Babs”. It was one of Babs’ first large-scale projects, and involved optimizing the laser path through the creation of sets. The software design is shown below on the left, where each color represents one set. The laser head would cut one set at a time, then move to the next one. To differentiate between a design that is cut and one that is engraved, the power of the laser was changed between sets. Then, the birch wood was laid out and the design measured onto it. Finally, the laser began and cut out the design according to the specifications. After washing the design to get rid of the soot, it was hung on the wall outside the Innovation Studio.
