Benjamin Ryan
Ben Ryan is from Montclair, NJ and his engineering began with “a desire to understand from a scientific perspective the vast range of physical processes in our world.” Ben feels that the STEM courses at Wake Forest offer an entrepreneurial focus that emphasizes human-centered-design. Ben’s capstone design project, the Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, is to design a net zero energy home for middle class families while considering both the environmental and economic impacts. His team is working under the guidance of Dr. Hunter Bachman (WFU Engineering) and Prof. Nick Lutzweiler (WFU Engineering) to protype their concept and improve energy efficiency in home construction.
Working as a Mechanical Engineering Intern with WSP USA, Ben ensured that HVAC systems could provide probe air distribution, and he utilized Revit, AutoCAD, and Excel to perform detail-oriented analysis of important engineering documents. His capstone project is of great interest to him; the challenge to design a net-zero energy home has presented a prime opportunity to “not only utilize technical skills and understanding of the design process, but to venture out by consulting technical experts in the various areas of building design.”
Outside of the classroom, Ben participates in Club Ultimate Frisbee and is a frequent volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Upon graduation, Ben plans to enter the workforce as a Business Technology Solutions Analyst for Deloitte in Arlington, VA
