Garrett Odell is from Annapolis, Maryland and has a particular interest and passion for biomedical engineering. He recognizes that Winston-Salem, NC is a “prime location” for growth in this field and is grateful for the opportunities he’s been able to be a part of. Besides the fascinating biomedical engineering elective and bioprinting elective courses he’s taken, he is also participating in research with the Clinical Image Analysis Lab for the Biomedical Informatics division of Wake Baptist Health. Guided by his mentor, Dr. Niazi, his research involves processing mammogram images to identify vascular calcification and endoscope videos to identify earwax in an effort to train artificial intelligence systems to process these images on their own through machine learning.
He has also worked in the warehouse for the biomedical company, Dynasplint, where he learned about manufacturing steel parts and product design. On a similar note, Garrett’s favorite Wake Engineering memory is his capstone team’s current design of an AV bypass graft monitoring system. He is looking forward to a lifetime of generating potential future products and shares that “it’s genuinely exciting to be able to design a legitimate biomedical innovation.” Outside of engineering, Garrett spent a lot of his time at Wake Forest in the Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) Christian ministry community where he has found the comfort of faith-led mentorship and friendship. Guided by his experiences and Wake Engineering skills, he plans to work for a biomedical corporation while he pursues launching his own start-up company “to produce and market cutting-edge biomedical and non-biomedical devices.”
