Kenneth Edwards is from South Egremont, MA and majored in Engineering with a minor in Middle East and South Asian Studies. Wake Engineering has helped foster his interest in data science and analytics through class exposure. Kenneth recalls how the engineering program gave him the push he needed to step out of his comfort zone through learning a variety of methods and softwares. For example, some of his engineering classes required him to learn how to use Matlab and use differential computational methods. This exposure kick started his interest in data science. Kenneth’s favorite Wake Engineering class was EGR 324: Hydrologic and Hydraulic Engineering. He enjoyed designing a culvert in this class. He also liked how the class “revolved around a real issue of erosion in close proximity to some buildings on campus. It was also nice to have to think about a problem close to me,” he shares.
Guided by Dr. Di Vittorio, Kenneth has conducted research on water quality factors in lakes where he utilized drone imagery to look for algal blooms in Salem Lake. Outside of Wake Engineering, Kenneth was involved in extracurricular activities, some of which he rose to a leadership position in. For instance, he served as the Vice President of Wake Forest’s Ski Club. Kenneth also had the opportunity to study Arabic in Morocco. Guided by his experiences and Wake Engineering skills, after graduation Kenneth plans to enter the workforce. He will be working for Epic Systems in Madison, WI as a Technical Solutions Engineer.
