Zhijun Zhang

Zhijun Zhang is from Tianjin, China and is double majoring in Engineering and Biology with a minor in Mathematics. Her interests lie primarily in medical device development within the Biomedical Engineering field. Though she enjoyed all of the projects in her engineering courses, her favorite was the Spine Immobilization Project in EGR 112. Due to the imperfect data and the obstacles that arose during that project, she believes it resembles an actual professional experience the most. During her time in the Engineering Department, she conducted a research project with Biomedical Engineer Dr. Philip Brown on the creation of a prosthetic arm for a student cellist until it was halted due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. She hopes to be able to return to this project and continue their research.

Before attending Wake Forest, and before she knew what branch of engineering she wanted to pursue, she interned as a lab assistant in a construction materials inspection company in China and it taught her the importance of standards and regulations in the engineering field. Throughout her time at Wake Forest, she was a peer educator in the Policy Group on Rape Education, Prevention and Response (PREPARE). She was also a co-chair for Project Pumpkin, where she contacted schools and organizations for participation while also planning the traffic routes of the event. Zhijun has also been a peer tutor for the Learning Assistance Center where she tutored for various subjects and classes, including EGR 111. Lastly, she was able to study Spanish in Salamanca, Spain where she immersed herself in the culture and enjoyed spending time watching the World Cup Tournament with the locals. Zhijun’s plans after graduation are to seek employment while attending graduate school or pursue her Master’s degree at a later time.
